Should We Ever Stop Taking Herbs?

© 1994 Sue Reynolds

Over the past several years, many of my clients have asked me the same questions: "How long will it take until I am feeling better?" or "How long will I be taking these things (herbs)?" Usually what I answer is "It depends." I’m not avoiding the question, there are many factors to consider, such as: your state of health when you first start to cleanse and rebuild your body, how well you are eating, how you handle your stress level, whether you exercise regularly, and so on. Michael has been writing inspiring articles in our newsletters on how to improve in those areas. Still, the question of your own health improvement will have to be looked at individually. Generally it could be as little as a few months to as long as a couple of years.

Once you have crossed over the bridge into better health, the next thing you will want to do is to maintain these improvements you have worked hard to achieve. (Here is where I answer the question of how long one should use herbal supplements.) I will use them all my life, because I will never choose to go back to the health problems I had in my early twenties - hay fever, back and neck pain, frequent illness, fatigue, and sugar addiction. And, the need for supplements is more than just improving our health. We live on a polluted planet. Until the air and water are cleaner, and there are no contaminants, chemicals, preservatives, or drugs in our food, we will continue to need supplements as a way of counter-acting these dangers. It is almost impossible to get all the necessary nutrients we need from diet alone. Many foods are grown in depleted soils. For instance, it has been shown that many oranges being grown have very little vitamin C in them. In my opinion, in order to achieve and maintain a sense of well-being and vitality, we need to continue supplementing our diet with herbs, vitamins, and minerals for the rest of our lives.

I believe, however, that we can all benefit from some type of maintenance program of herbs to continue feeding ourselves all the wonderful nutrients our bodies need to maintain themselves properly. If you find that one particular herb or combination really "does it" for you, that is great. Our bodies, however, need to have a variety of nutrients. Eating one food daily can stress the body; this is why many health experts tell us to vary our diet. With all the foods to choose from, we really can eat a diverse selection. It is the same with herbs; our body can use the nutrients from an herb to feed certain organs and tissues, but after a time, it will need to feed other areas to keep them all functioning at optimal levels.

I want to introduce you to a specific maintenance program that is simple enough to follow, for the rest of your life. It involves using several herbal combinations on a rotating basis. If you prefer not to make regular office visits, or feel "done" with the cleansing process, but would still like to supplement your diet, then this is for you. I am eager to share the details of this maintenance plan with you. Call today for further details!
