DESCRIPTION:
The Alpha-Stim 100 is classified as a combination transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator (TENS) and cranial electrotherapy stimulator (CES).
INDICATIONS: Alpha-Stim microcurrent electrical therapy (MET) technology is continuously being subjected to rigorous study and evaluation by the international medical community. Findings to date indicate that the Alpha-Stim 100 is an effective treatment with broad applications for a variety of syndromes involving pain and anxiety. In many cases it is the sole therapeutic method required. Effective results in pain management have been seen during and/or subsequent to stimulation over effected body parts, adjacent areas, and areas removed from those in pain. Alpha-Stim CES is indicated for the management of anxiety disorders or for the short term relief of the symptoms of anxiety. As with any therapeutic intervention, not all patients will respond to the Alpha-Stim. The degree of efficacy will vary with the nature of the problem being treated and with the method of treatment. Accordingly, a trial evaluation is recommended on each patient to ascertain the long-term benefits of treatment and to determine the best possible electrode locations for pain management.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: No contraindications have been established. Alpha-Stim treatment is not known to be harmful. Alpha-Stim may affect the operation of cardiac pacemakers (particularly demand type pacemakers); it is not recommended for use by patients with known heart disease without physician evaluation. Do not stimulate directly on the eyes, or over the carotid sinus (upper side of neck, below the ear and behind the jaw). Do not allow children to use or handle this device without adult supervision. Do not operate potentially dangerous machinery or motor vehicles during, and in some cases, for several hours after treatment. Safety of stimulation has not been established during pregnancy.
PRECAUTIONS: For external use only. Caution is advised in cases where other forms of analgesia would not be used; such as to retain the beneficial aspects of pain for diagnosis or in cases where patients may overuse pain-controlled areas. The most common area of concern is skin reactions at the electrode sites. To minimize this problem, clean the skin prior to use. Cleaning the skin will also assure better electrode contact. If skin irritation occurs, consult your physician.
ADVERSE EFFECTS: Adverse effects are usually mild and self-limiting. Adverse effects seen in approximately 4,800 patients in controlled, open, uncontrolled conditions, and by physician survey and reasonably associated with the use of MET and/or CES are dizziness (0.1%), skin irritation/electrode burns (0.08%), and headaches (0.02%). There have been reports of blood pressure being lowered by CES so care should be taken in treating patients on high blood pressure medication. CES treatment at higher than necessary currents may cause dizziness or nausea that is usually transient, but can sometimes last for hours to days. Treatment immediately prior to going to sleep may cause difficulty sleeping due to increased alertness. It is recommended that CES be used at least 3 hours before going to sleep. Paradoxical reactions such as hyperexcited states, increased anxiety, and sleep disturbances are rare, but may occur. No seizures, deaths or serious injury has ever been reported following the use of the Alpha-Stim.

This is everything necessary to begin to use the Alpha-Stim 100 for pain management right away. Ear clip electrodes for CES applications for anxiety are usually sold as an optional accessory in the USA, but included elsewhere.
5 YEAR WARRANTY: Each Alpha-Stim 100 is warranted to be free from defects of workmanship and materials under normal use for a period of five years except for replacement of batteries and accessories. See Owner's Manual for complete details.
