Neroli is native to the Far East and adapted to the Mediterranean. Primarily cultivated in Italy, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, USA and France. The origin of the name Neroli is uncertain. One belief is that it was derived from the name of Emperor Nero. The most popular belief is that it came from Anne-Marie, Princess of Nerola, wife of an Italian prince who lived in the 16th century. She used it to perfume her gloves and bath water. Her glove perfume became very popular and gloves scented with it were known as "guanti neroli".
