Psyllium, a natural bulk laxative, is commonly found in many over-the-counter laxatives available today. Psyllium contains mucilagins that are beneficial as both a laxative and an anti-diarrheal. Psyllium is useful for restoring normal bowel functions and promoting healthy colon functions. The nutritional benefits of psyllium are great for cleansing the large intestines, expelling toxins from the body and aiding constipation and diarrhea. Psyllium may be used to treat irritable bowel syndrome and reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Psyllium may also be used to treat hemorrhoids and yeast infections. In addition, psyllium may be used to relive intestinal inflammation which can be caused by indigestion, as well as stomach and duodenal ulcers.

How Does it Work?
Psyllium hulls have a remarkable ability to absorb water many times their own weight, which makes them swell. This exerts a gentle pressure on intestinal walls, stimulating them to contract normally. However, psyllium must be used with plenty of water, and it should not be used if someone has a bowel obstruction. Psyllium’s ability to absorb bowel toxins, together with the natural action of the bowel, work to keep the walls of the intestine clear of harmful debris. An additional advantage of psyllium hulls, when taken with a meal, is their natural ability to absorb dietary sugar, slowing its absorption into the bloodstream. This may be an advantage for those who know they have overindulged.

Scientific Data
According to the American Heart Association, 50 percent of middle-aged Americans have dangerously high levels of blood cholesterol, a contributing factor to the high rate of cardiovascular disease in the U.S. Scientific research has shown that cutting down on fats and increasing the amount of soluble fiber in the diet can significantly reduce these levels. But getting enough soluble fiber into the diet can be a problem. Most foods only contain small amounts. Even oat bran is a mere 7 percent soluble fiber.
